Two MPs Abstain, Four Votes Declared Invalid

Of the 223 MPs who voted to elect a new President in Parliament yesterday (20), two MPs abstained from voting while four votes were declared invalid, as announced by the General Secretary of the Parliament.

 Accordingly Selvarasa Kajendran and G.G. Ponnambalam representing the Tamil National People’s Alliance did not vote at the election.

Parliament Secretary General Dhammika Dasanayake announced that four votes have been cancelled out of the number of votes cast.

The counting of votes began after the validity and the invalidity of the votes was verified.
