Two Sri Lankan wrestlers, Madushanka Weerasooriya and Gayan Ekanayake are expected to take part at the Asian Wrestling Championship which is scheduled to be held from April 19 to 24 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The two senior wrestlers Madushanka (74kg) and Gayan (75Kg) both took part at the last October World Wrestling Championship in Norway while Madushanka was the captain of the Sri Lanka six member team at that time. The Asian championship is good exposure for the Sri Lankan wrestlers for the next Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
The Mongolian tour is also very important for the Sri Lankan players as they will get residential training course until next July to focus on Commonwealth Games.Two wrestlers with their coach Jagath Priyaratne will join for this training programme and they will depart to Mongolia to give priority for training course on next Sunday (9).
The International Wrestling Federation (IWF) is conducting this training programme and all credit should go to the National Olympic Committee (NOC) to coordinate this program to the Sri Lanka players. In addition four wrestlers and a coach are already taking part at the Training course in Hungaria aiming at the next Commonwealth Games which is scheduled to be held from July 28 to August 8 in Birmingham.
Meanwhile the Asian Wrestling Federation congress will be held parallel to the Asian Championship In Mongolia and Sri Lankan Wrestling Federation President Sarath Hewawitharana is expected to take part in this event.
