The background

President Barack Obama made his case to the Democratic National Convention – and those in the US who were not watching MTV’s Video Music Awards – Thursday night. Twitter, at least, was paying attention: According to the microblogging site, his speech drove 52,757 tweets per minute, a new political record.

Political observers are divided as to whether the speech could be considered a success – some say he failed to offer a clear argument for giving him a second term – and so are the armchair critics on Twitter. LaToya Jackson, it appears, was well please, but not everyone else was. Here’s the skim:

Really liked the speech. Barack Obama spoke as our President — and for all of us. Straightforward and honest. We know what we have to do.

Votes for Romney

#Obama speech flat. No energy. Defensive. One of his worst. #tcot

— Larry Kudlow (@larry_kudlow) September 7, 2012

Clint Eastwood’s empty chair would have given a better speech than Barack Obama tonight.

— Erick Erickson (@EWErickson) September 7, 2012

I didn’t think I could get more confident about November after Romney’s speech, but Obama’s speech did it. #RomneyRyan2012

So, was the DNC itself a success?

Dem convention worked because M. Obama, B. Clinton, and B. Obama speeches worked together to tell a coherent story. A single, long speech.

The music is better at the DNC. But embarrassing delegate dancing unites both parties. nationalmemo.com/watch-the-demo…

Wait, Osama bin Laden is dead? WE KILLED BIN LADEN? WHY DIDN’T ANYONE AT THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION MENTION THIS UNTIL NOW?!
