Tweedlers’ Jukebox Song of the Week – Who’s That Girl?

The Eurythmics are one of the first acts that come to mind when I recall the music of the eighties. Sweet Dreams (are Made of This) was their breakout song and after that they enjoyed a string of popular hits. Among my favourites is this gem from 1983. Who’s That Girl? was a big hit, reaching #3 in the UK and having a music video that proved equally popular with singer, Annie Lennox, appearing as both a woman and a man.

Who’s That Girl? is a simple song of one woman’s struggle with her boyfriend who she frequently sees with different women. She has been left heartbroken and deeply fragile by these infidelities. I’m sure as a kid I had these visions of two people running together when the lyric, “Who’s that girl, running around with you,” used to be sung by Lennox. These are the perils of trying to interpret a song when you’re not even a teenager. I have since come to understand what this one is really about and a fabulous song it is.
