Foam and Innerspring Mattresses

Mattresses are manufactured in many different ways. They can be innerspring, where the main support is provided by springs beneath a layer of foam. They can be 100% foam, including any individual type of foam or combinations - such as 100% late foam, 100% memory foam or a combination of memory foam and latex.

Polyurethane is another common type of foam used in mattresses - in fact, polyurethane is the base foam used to create memory foam! So how about Tuft & Needle and Casper mattresses - what foam do they use? They are amongst the top selling brands in the country!

Both of these firms shrugged off the traditional ways of selling mattresses by selling direct to consumers. Their customers were not faced with the extra costs applied by distributors, bedding stores and other third parties involved in the regular sales process. So what is the basic support offered by Casper and Tuft & Needle, and what are the other differences between them?

Tuft & Needle vs. Casper - the Genuine Differences

In discussing the Tuft & Needle vs. Casper question, it's not a matter of which wins! It's a matter of which is best for you! Some may prefer the Tuft & Needle and others might find that the Casper suits them better. So let's begin by looking at each mattress in detail, with no preconceived judgment or preference either way. First, let's look at the way each has been made: their construction.

Construction of Casper vs. Tuft & Needle

First of all, both are 100% foam mattresses. Each designer and manufacturer has taken a different approach to the construction of the mattress. We shall first explain how each is constructed, and then compare the respective benefits of each.

So here is an explanation of how each mattress is made up and how they differ. We will then analyze the effects of these differences on how people sleep.

Casper Mattress Construction

The Casper mattress consists of four different layers of foam totaling 9.5 inches. These are, from top to bottom:

Layer 1: A 1.5″ layer of responsive polyurethane foam. This layer is claimed to provide comfort and bounce - although you may not get a lot of bounce from a 1.5-inch thick foam! That said, it is still a comfortable top layer for a mattress, and also helps you to stay cool when sleeping.

Layer 2: Below this is another 1.5″ layer of foam - this time a regular memory foam. Its 4.0 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) density provides good support with the memory foam experience. The fact that you are sleeping on top of the responsive PU foam, and not the memory foam, means that you are less likely to heat up during the night. The memory foam provides you with good pressure support and a very comfortable asleep.

Layer 3: Another 1.5″ foam layer. This time a medium density polyurethane foam to provide a medium density layer above the support layer of:

Layer 4: A 5-inch layer of support polyurethane foam which is the foundation layer for the mattress. This layer absorbs your weight and ensures that you have a good sleep with a comfortable top to the mattress and a strong support layer at the bottom.

Tuft & Needle Construction

Tuft & Needle took a different approach to mattress construction. This mattress is 10 inches thick versus the 9.5″ of the Casper mattress - although generally, a half-inch difference in thickness is largely irrelevant. The Tuft & Needle mattress is constructed with:

Layer 1: A 3-inch layer of polyurethane foam on top. Like the Casper mattress, this is also a responsive PU foam which breaths well, providing a cool sleeping surface during the night. It was designed specifically by Tuft & Needle to be responsive in a similar way to regular memory foams.

Layer 2: The bottom layer comprises 7-inches of a support layer of higher density polyurethane foam. This provides a good support base, while the top layer offers comfort and good pressure relief for your pressure points: your shoulders, hips, knees and even elbows if you sleep on your side.

Each of these mattresses can be described as slightly to the firm side of medium. They offer excellent support for back and belly sleepers, and the responsive top layer makes it good also for a side sleeper.

Comparing the two different constructions of these mattresses, it may appear as though the Casper is the better, but do you really need four layers in a mattress? It's your choice. So to help you make it, let's have a look at some of the other differences between these two mattresses.

The Mattress Cover

Many people do give the mattress cover the attention it deserves. In the Casper vs. Tuft & Needle comparison, the mattress cover of is roughly the same. White, stretchy to allow close fitting, and also nice and soft for a lovely silky feel.

The thinner the mattress cover, the easier it is for air to flow into and out of the mattress. This keeps it fresh and cool at night. One of the issues regarding the thickness - or thinness in this case, is that a thin mattress cover can easily be damaged.

Here is a summary of the differences between the two mattresses:

Casper Mattress vs. Tuft & Needle

So which is better? While compiling the information needed for this Tuft & Needle vs. Casper mattress review, it soon became apparent that there was very little between them. At the beginning, most differences were marginal. However, it became apparent that there were some aspects of each that might make a difference to some people.

Here are the factors you might want to consider before you make a choice between the two.

Benefits of the Casper Mattress

We have rated the Casper mattress from 6.5 - 7.0 on a 1-10 scale for firmness. The Tuft & Needle is 6.0 - 6.5. So, if you prefer a mattress that is not firm, but perhaps on the firmer side of medium, then this should be your choice. If your body weight is on the heavy side, then this mattress will suit you better than the Tuft & Needle.

Another property of the Casper mattress that some people might like is that it has a softer feel, even though it is overall firmer than the Tuft & Needle. If you like your mattress to fold into you or hug you, then this is the better option for you. If you prefer not to feel enclosed when you sleep, then the Tuft & Needle would be better for you.

Benefits of the Tuft & Needle Mattress

We found the Tuft & Needle mattress to be slightly softer than the Casper mattress. Not everybody found this, but we did on our tests. That indicates that there is not a lot between the two on the firmness scale. However, if you prefer a mattress not to hug or enfold you, then this is the one.

It may be overall softer than the Casper, but not as huggy. That is likely due to the type of viscoelastic/memory foam used by Casper. That type of foam suits many people, but not everybody.

Tuft & Needle vs. Casper: Overall Conclusion

Our overall conclusion on the Tuft & Needle vs. Casper mattress comparison and review 2020 is the each has many positives and few negatives. While the Casper mattress offers some factors that would suit many people, so too does the Tuft & Needle.

Neither can be said to be better than the other - read the review and choose your preference from the mattress that suits you best. Our Casper vs. Tuft & Needle review indicates that they are very similar in comfort level if not in construction.
