Truly Meaningful Gifts for Christmas 2012 at the World Vision Catalog

Well, hopefully by now you’ve finished digesting your Thanksgiving turkey and all the other goodies that you had on Thursday. And hopefully you’ve survived the throngs of shoppers pushing and shoving to get the latest iToys and flashy electronic gizmos.

While we’re enjoying all that the season has to offer, one thing that’s always good to do is to take a step back and to consider those in the world who don’t get to eat a huge meal at Thanksgiving, or even a huge meal on any day, or even a regular meal. There are those here at home and in other countries who still go to bed hungry every night, who lack basic things like clean water, basic medical care, warm clothes, and security.

World Vision is a great charity that helps the neediest around the world. They have a unique “gift catalog” where instead of buying more junk that’ll end up in drawers, closets or landfills, you can give something that’ll really help someone in need.

Here’s a video that shows how it works:

If you flip through their gift catalog, you’ll see that indeed, instead of ties and smartphones they have listings like “Goat a 2 Chickens” and “Business Loan for a Woman”. While the listings themselves are mainly representative of the broad kinds of help your donation will be providing, they help you visualize exactly where your money is going.

You can donate yourself or give a donation on behalf of someone else and send them a card. Now admittedly, sometimes the whole “a donation has been made in your name” thing can be a little disappointing (after all, who doesn’t want to be able to hold their gift in their hand on Christmas morning?) so World Vision also has a few tangible items you can receive when you give donations of certain amounts.

The Artisan beaded necklace you see to the right is handmade in Thailand and is hand-made. It can be yours when you give a gift of $60 or more to the Maximum Impact Fund, this is the fund that provides assistance to those who are in the most need. The necklace is made of glass and is 44 inches around. It’s a beautiful reminder that your donation can touch the lives of those halfway around the world.

This tumbler is yours for a $50 or more donation to the Maximum Impact Fund. It’s one of the more popular items that World Vision sells, and is constructed of very sturdy, BPA-free plastic that keeps cold drinks icy cold without your hand feeling it. It holds 16 ounces of liquid and comes with two plastic straws. The cup measures about 4 inches wide by 6 inches tall, 9.5 inches tall if you count the straw.

Who doesn’t love VeggieTales? In this newest DVD from VeggieTales, Bob the Tomato, Larry the Cucumber, and Junior Asparagus are all back in The League of Incredible Vegetables. It’s a fun and exciting VeggieTales adventure that teaches kids to place their trust in God, and to know that God is always on their side. It’s that powerful message that World Vision helps bring to live every day. It’s yours with a gift of $50 or more to the Maximum Impact Fund.

Finally, the little pig you see to your left is yours if you give $25 or more to the Maximum Impact Fund. Four years ago I actually highlighted Pallu the Plush Pig’s friend Gertie the Goat in a post around Christmastime. These are some of the most adorable little stuffed animals you’ll find anywhere, and make perfect stocking stuffers. What’s more, it’s a great reminder that just as you’re giving stuffed animals to someone here, World Vision is using your donation to provide pigs, goats, and chickens to help sustain poor communities around the world.

Whether you just give a direct donation or you receive one of these gifts, you’ll be doing a wonderful thing for the neediest in the world. While you’re enjoying your holidays, remember that it doesn’t take a lot to bring others hope where they have none.
