Oppo A37

Oppo has been a steadily growing smartphone maker as far as Indian smartphone market. They have been quite innovative with each of their products. Next in line is Oppo A37. It has been launched as a camera centric device. Oppo A37 boasts of some really great features. Let us go through a full review of the Oppo A37 in the following paragraphs.

Design and Looks

As has been a constant feature with the recent Oppo smartphones, the Oppo A37 has metal body casing and a arc edge design elements. Inspite of being launched under the budget segment, the phone looks quite premium for its price.

Another best point we would just love to be in love with is the weight. The Oppop A37 weighs just 136 grams. Lighter phones tend to give you more in terms of productivity and durability. The lighter weight makes it one of the lightest devices even with the case on. Good to see that Oppo paying equal attention to both premium devices and the budget ones in its range of products.

The physical dimensions of the device read 143 x 72 x 7 mm. The rear of the phone has been quite smooth. This ensures a comfortable grip.

Display

The Oppo A37 comes with a 5 inch HD IPS display. The HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels is quite good for the outdoor visibility. The pixel density reads 294 ppi which should be good enough for viewing HD content.

The screen is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 – the latest iteration of World’s toughest glass. It has the 2.5D Glass which makes it one of the most scratch free devices out there.

Hardware and performance

The Oppo A37 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor. The Quadcore processor clocks at 1.2 GHz speed. The onboard RAM reads 2 GB which is actually in tune with recent mid range devices. Given the current breed of apps which need more RAM, the 2 GB RAM must be a good thought. The graphics are taken care of by Adreno 306 GPU.

The internal storage is a concern though. Oppo A37 has just 16 GB of inbuilt memory capacity. However, you can expand by another 256 GB.

The exact performance of the device needs to be analysed still. The Oppo A37 has been released just a week ago on July 1, 2016. It can be too early to come up with any solid reviews about the actual performance of the device.

Camera

Oppo has been more aggressive with the camera perspective in almost all of its devices. The Oppo F1 is a good example for the trend.

Oppo A37 is not an exemption either. It has a 8 MP rear camera with LED flash. The camera has a f/2.2 aperture which lets you take some nice and good quality images both is low or bright light conditions. The sensor comes with a larger 1.4 micron. Though few would say that the resolution is lower in comparison to the modern devices, yet the larger aperture should help you in being able to get good shots in low light by letting more light into the sensor.

The front camera reads 5 MP in terms of resolution. The OmniBSI sensor features the same 1.4 micron aperture. That would mean brighter and good quality selfies. The camera comes with a flash feature that that uses the screen brightness of your device to illuminate your face so that you will get a better selfie even in low light conditions. The front camera also features a Beautify technology. The technology optimises your selfies using an algorithm that uses the data obtained from millions of users. The Beautify technology currently supports around seven Intelligent Beautification levels and two levels of skin tones.

The rear camera supports Ultra HD photography. The software stitches together the five images taken in quick succession to arrive at shots up to 24 MP resolution. The rear and front cameras are capable of HD video recording at 1920 pixel resolution at 30 fps.

Software

The Oppo A37 runs on Android Lollipop 5.1. In fact, Oppop has its own Colors OS 3.0 based on Android Lollipop. There is currently no word about whether it will be upgraded to Android Marshmallow. But given the regular updates being received by Oppo F1 Plus – we can safely assume the possible updates from time to time.

The Colors OS has been stated to be made leaner by proper optimisation. Oppo claims that it is now 30 percent faster. The software features a Privacy Mode that lets you hide contacts, apps or even your files before you hand over your phone to your friends.

Battery and other features

The Oppo A37 comes with a 2630 mAh Li-ion battery capacity. The battery is non removable. A moderate usage should give you a day’s backup. The phone has 4G compatibility. However, the 4G connectivity works only on SIM 1.

The Oppo A37 offers all the regular connectivity features you would expect from your device. The connectivity features include WiFi ( with support for 802.11, b/g/n WiFi standards), GPS, Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB 2.0 among others. The device also comes with USB OTG functionality. Considering that this is the most in-demand feature, it would help you connect devices like USB mouses or keyboards to your smartphone.

As for the color options, you can buy this device in gold, rose gold and gray colors. Launched in India on July 1, 2016 – it is priced at Rs. 11990.

Summing it up

The Oppo A37 does not impress much on paper. However, the camera features seem to be impressive enough. The slim and compact nature of the device can be an added advantage.

The price seems a little out of place given the competition that the Oppo A37 has. Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, LeEco Le 2 and the Lenovo K4 Note are some of the devices that may make Oppo A37 look a little low in features at the same price band. They have better specifications and features compared to Oppo A37.

To sum it up, it can be a good option along with the competing devices. Premium looks and a few great camera features make it stand up a little. Though it does not have some great features on the expensive devices, yet for the price point it has been launched it could be a good listing.
