Travel Photography: Still Life with Bicycle

Black bike against roses, Amsterdam

Whether we rent bikes, bring our own, or borrow, whenever we travel, we like to incorporate some cycling. In my family, the ratio of bikes to people is about 4:1 (I own a road bike, a mountain bike, a commuter bike, a vintage Schwinn, and a Brompton folding bike). In addition to being a great way to see a place, bicycles, to me, have such a personal element: how people accessorize them, ride them, or even park and lock them. I have a subset of my travel photos that I refer to as “bicycles in their natural habitats.”

Here are a few of my favorites. Enjoy the ride!

Mysore, India

Southbank, London, England

Cycling from Monet’s house in Giverny to the train station in Vernon, France

Along the Canal du Midi, France

Mountain bikers, Whistler, Canada

Going surfing, North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii

Bicycles provide easier access to the beach than a car, Oahu, Hawaii

Cyclists riding off the ferry, The Netherlands

The white bicycles of the Park de Hoge Veluwe, The Netherlands

Cycling the Rijnkanaal, The Netherlands

Great contrast between bicycle and lock, Amsterdam (I wanted this bike!)

The Harriman Trail, Sun Valley, Idaho

Mission Beach, San Diego, California
