Travel Guide Budget and Itinerary for Batanes

By Wanderingjoshua

Batanes is one of the most beautiful provinces in the Philippines. Rolling, verdant hills, fetching landscapes, bucolic ambiance and rugged but stunning views make a trip to this province worth it. I spent a few days here and would love to return in the future.

Guide

Batanes was a bucket list destination of mine and I was happy that I finally visited. The landscapes were just as I imagined. The province was simply beautiful and it still has an untouched ambiance despite its growing popularity. There's limited public transportation, but it is still convenient to explore the island at your own pace. The views aren't just fetching, the province also has a rich culture that it wants to preserve.

The attractions on the island are segmented into different areas, the three most common itinerary inclusions are North and South Batan, and Sabtang. Some travelers also include Itbayat to their itineraries, but this part of Batanes is difficult and expensive to reach.

Batanes has a predominantly Catholic population. The Basco Church or also known as the Santo Domingo Cathedral is more than 100 years old and is a town landmark.

Vayang Rolling Hills

The views of Vayang Rolling Hills are spectacular, especially on a clear day. The mix of different shades of green, blue and white are picture perfect.

Basco Lighthouse

This lighthouse on Naidi Hill provides overlooking views of the province's stunning landscapes. It isn't an old structure, but it was the first lighthouse on the island.

Valugan Boulder Beach is unique because instead of sand, you'll find boulders and rocks lining the shore. The ideal time to take photos is during sunrise.
Tukon Church

The Abad's had this church constructed so they could just walk to it every time they want to go to mass. The design and facade are unique and eye catching.

Dipnaysupuan Japanese Tunnel
The Japanese made it to Batanes during World War II. They had tunnels built to serve as a hideout and military posts.

South Batan
Chawa View Deck

Chawa provides fetching views of the cerulean sea, rugged rock formations and rolling hills.

Racuh a Payaman

Marlboro Country provides beautiful views of the rolling, verdant hills and the sea. The area is also a pastureland.

Honesty Coffee Shop
This shop is all about honesty. Customers come and go and maybe even buy things. It will be up to them to pay and get the exact change for their purchases.
Alapad Pass and Rock Formation

This area displays the province's rugged but fetching landscapes. Alapad was also one of the locations for the movie of Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta.

House of Dakay

This traditional house has been around since the 1880s. It has survived many disasters since and is still around as a cultural gem.

This quaint village has plenty of beautiful views around it. The community is simple and uses fishing as one of its sources of income. The laid back atmosphere is refreshing.

Sabtang
Sabtang Lighthouse

Like in other coastal towns in Batanes, you'll see a lighthouse as soon as you disembark from the boat in Sabtang.

San Vicente Ferrer Church

You'll find a handful of beautiful churches all over Batanes, one of which is this one found in Sabtang. It's been around for more than a century and has become a landmark and attraction.

Chamantad Viewpoint

Out of all the views I've seen in Batanes, Chamantad is my favorite. The views of the sea, rock formations, coves and cliffs were spectacular. I couldn't stop staring and taking pictures.

Savidug Village

This village of stone houses allows you to catch a glimpse of local life.

Chavayan Village

Chavayan is another traditional village to include in your itinerary. You'll see a handful of stone houses here as well.

Morong Beach and Natural Arch

This fetching beach is famous because of the natural arch you'll see while there.

Getting Around
There are different ways to explore Batanes, but the cheapest is to rent a bicycle for P500/day. You can also rent a scooter or motorbike for the day for around P1000 to P1500 per day. If you don't want to bike or drive a motorcycle, you can hire a tricycle. Rate for North Batan tour is P1000, P1500 for South Batan and P1000 for Sabtang.

For large groups, you can book a mini-bus or van. I would recommend booking with Wakay Tours, reach them through Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bataneswakaytravel/.
How to Go
There are many flights to and from Batanes operated by Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and others. Book your tickets months before your trip to get the lowest fare possible. The weather in Batanes is unpredictable which means flight delays and cancellations are possible even in the summer. Some have been stranded for an extra day or so because of inclement weather. Take this into account when you book flights, accommodation and when you file your vacation leave.
Where to Stay
Batanes has become a top destination which has led to the development of the towns. There are now more accommodation options for those who want to enjoy their vacation on the island. You might have to book a hotel or guesthouse months before your tip because rooms are booked out quickly.
