Transitional style is tough. Nobody feels like they are getting it right. I am actually colder in the spring than I am in the winter because I find temperature control with what I wear more difficult in spring. This is why I feel that the best way to get through the transitional seasons is to borrow a little from the season you are coming out of and a little from the season to come.
During the summer/fall transition last year, I did a post on wearing sandals and sweaters which, much to my surprise, was really popular and inspired a lot of conversation in my Facebook Group with members sharing their outfits using this strategy. While I thought about doing another post in this vein for spring transition, not only would it be repetitive but I don’t think we’re there quite yet, at least not here in the northeast. However, the weather is indicating we are ready for sweaters and flats.
Sweaters and Flats Looks
I don’t know about you, but by the time spring starts showing its face, I am ready to be done with my boots for a while. I love them but I am tired of them. When I put on a pair of flats it was like I could hear my feet saying, “aahhhh. Change.”

Outfit #1
When I saw this sweater from Rails, it inspired a springy look that was still perfect for transitional weather. I styled it with a pair of high rise ankle jeans from Madewell. I finished the look with blush pink slingback flats from Everlane and pink stud earrings from Kate Spade.
Outfit #2
I love these leopard loafers from Madewell because they can really add a pop to a basic casual sweater look. I styled them with boyfriend jeans from Frame that I styled with an oversized alpaca crew sweater. I finished the look with tortoise hoop earrings.
Outfit #3
I created another look using the shoes with an unexpected pop of color using these green loafer flats from J. Crew. I styled the shoes with a pair of straight-leg cropped pants in tobacco and chocolate short sleeve sweater from Theory. I finished the look with iridescent earrings from Ippolita.
Outfit #4
While shopping with a client last year, a shopper was wearing these mules from Saludos. My client and I thought they were so cute that we stopped her and asked for information about them. The shopper told us they were so comfortable and easy to throw on. I styled them here with a pair of skinny jeans from Wit & Wisdom and a draped neck wool sweater from Cos. I finished the outfit with slim horn drop earrings.
Outfit #5
In this last look, I styled this adorable Breton style sweater with heart detail with a pair of skinny ankle pants from J. Crew and navy flats from Birdies. I finished the outfit with red floral stud earrings.
