Transforming Classic Style: Adding Pizazz Without Going Overboard!

By Imogenl @ImogenLamport

Today, we're addressing a common concern: how to elevate your classic style without veering into plain Jane territory. If you've found yourself feeling like your classic wardrobe is a bit too bland or uninspired, let's explore how you can add pizzazz and personality to your outfits while staying true to your core style. Do you know your personality dressing style? Find out here...

Understanding Classic Style

Classic style is often associated with timeless, elegant pieces that form the backbone of a well-curated wardrobe. It's about simplicity, clean lines, and quality fabrics. Being labelled as Classic is just the foundation of your style, so just because you lean towards Classic doesn't mean you can't add your unique flair!

Layering in Personality

Personality is layered, you may have a core style that has to be part of every outfit, but you'll also be dipping into at least 1-3 other personality dressing styles (just as you don't drive on only one lane on a freeway), many people are not just one type; they may have a blend of styles. For example, you may be a Relaxed Classic or a Classic with a hint of Drama or a Classic with Feminine touches or a Classic with a Creative twist or more likely you'll be a combination of three personality dressing styles, such as Classic with Relaxed and Feminine. The key is to explore what other layers you can add to your classic base to express your unique personality and so make every outfit feel more like you.

Reflect on your favourite outfits. What details do you love? Are there feminine details, relaxed silhouettes, or elegant touches? This will help you see what you're naturally drawn to and how you can incorporate those elements into your outfits. Very few garments are just one of the personality dressing styles, so many are a combination of two or more.

Experiment with Fabrics and Textures

Adding interesting textures or fabrics can elevate a classic outfit. Think about incorporating soft fabrics, lace, or structured materials that can provide visual interest without feeling too out there. Pair a classic blazer with a silk blouse or a wool skirt with a leather belt. This not only adds depth to your outfit but also keeps things visually engaging.

Add your Classic blazer to your jeans and tee outfit for a more relaxed vibe.

Pair that white button-up shirt with a silk skirt for a Classic/Feminine mix. The options are endless as to how you can mix different details and garments together to create your own style.

Play with Colour

The Classic colours are navy, black, white, grey and a little light blue, but you don't have to stick with those, you may look for Classic styles in pastel Feminine colours, or include a dramatic bold colour to a classic outfit to bring it to life.

Accessorize Thoughtfully

Accessories are a great way to add pizzazz. Statement necklaces, bold earrings, or a standout handbag can transform a classic look into something more Dramatic, vibrant and personalized. Maybe you prefer something less dramatic and more feminine and delicate, or perhaps you love turquoise or lapis lazuli beads which express your Relaxed side, maybe it's a large elegant pearl on a leather thong. There are just so many different kinds of accessories you can use in your outfits to express different elements of your personality and style up your outfits.

From belts and bracelets to shoes, hats and handbags, there are no end of accessories that can help you add that spark of pizazz to your outfits (I've got heaps of ideas in my Finishing Touch ebook along with my A ccessorise with Style masterclass).

Incorporate Unique Elements

If you want to soften your classic look, incorporate feminine details like ruffles, lace, or flowy fabrics. Alternatively, if creativity is more your style, opt for asymmetrical cuts or unusual silhouettes that add a unique twist to your classic pieces.

Small details can make a big difference. Look for classic pieces with interesting buttons, unique stitching, or other subtle design elements. These details can set your outfits apart from the standard classics.

Embracing Your Unique Style

Remember, dressing is all about personal expression. Classic doesn't have to mean boring! By layering in different elements that resonate with your personality, you can create outfits that feel true to you and leave you feeling confident.
