Touring Homes During My Travels

By Simone Design Blog @HomeSpire

It’s Friday and the weekend is here! It’s been quite a week for me, going on a marvelous long-weekend jaunt to Key West, Florida, with my husband Christopher. We usually take advantage of the MLK holiday weekend in January to go someplace warm and sunny. It’s a great way to take a break from the cold.

Whenever I travel to a new location, I always love to take pictures of homes and interesting scenes. Every place has something unique to offer, be it natural scenery, architecture, or food. Key West is no exception. This island has beautiful homes called conch houses, which have a special style that was developed in Key West by Bahamian immigrants. Their architectural style is similar to the Classical Revival or Neoclassical style. Conch houses generally lack ornamentation other than carved brackets and/or rafter ends on porches. A Key West house that everyone likes to see is the Ernest Hemmingway home, with its famous six-toed cats. The most popular tourist sight in Key West, however, is not a house but the famous Southernmost point marker. Key West has a wealth of beauty and culture that doesn’t disappoint.

I wish I could show you all the pictures I took, but it would take many posts. I’ve combed through them and selected these ones to show you. They give a nice taste of the homes, sights and sounds of Key West.

I added a picture of this boarded-up house to the collection because it has so much character. I would love to be the one renovating it. Those intricately carved finials on the porches really add to the curb appeal. It’s a fabulous house that, once renovated, I could easily see myself living and entertaining in.

I’m going to end my tour with a few snapshots of a Key West sunset. You will never tire of the sunsets here. They are spectacular and you’ll no doubt want to spend every evening standing by the pier taking picture after picture.

To the finale.

This trip was such a welcome diversion from the cold weather in Maryland. It was wonderful to be in Key West basking in the sunshine and experiencing the culture and beauty that makes this key so very popular.
