TOS Crew Write With World Review!

By Upatdawn @lisakeva

Over the years we've enjoyed learning current events through God's World News Magazine.  When I was offered a chance to check out their new pilot writing program for middle schoolers, I enthusiastically agreed.
Write with World is a two-part curriculum that spans 2 years of study.  Each year is  broken down into 16 key lessons equalling 80 exercises. It's loosely connected to World Magazine and God's World News and is intended for 6th-9th graders.  Though it can be used for high schooler if the student is weak in writing.
From their website:
"Write with WORLD is the new middle school writing curriculum developed by education and media professionals. Use it to inspire and train your students to become proficient communicators who can exceed educational requirements and navigate today's growing new media and conflicting worldviews.

Write with WORLD exposes students to:
-reading that develops discernment
-contemporary subjects and professional guidance to pique interest
-flexible exercises to build confidence and skill for using today's new media
-a thoughtful and meaningful Christian worldview

Your students learn to write with purpose.

Writing skills are commonly deficient among students entering college, but the problem and its fallout begin years earlier. Poor writing skills hurt a student's performance on exams and in courses requiring composition. For Christian students, poor communication hinders the believer's voice from influencing their social circle and, ultimately, the broader public square.

Christians in particular should try to be the best communicators. They possess the truth and need to articulate a biblical worldview. Just as important, today's students must be discriminating media consumers - able to read, hear, and watch what the world is saying and to recognize the truth."

OUR EXPERIENCE:
I reviewed this with my 8th grader.  I really like the touches of searching for the Worldview in advertising and the 'advice nuggets' from the editors and writers of God's World News mixed in throughout the study. The student book is eye-catching and full of vivid pictures as well.
Although this program is several steps above average in content, the journaling exercises were still too "touchy-feely" for my very black and white/logic minded son.  My expressive, colorful, charismatic 5th grader would have a blast with this curriculum.  BUT, honestly I just can't wrap my mind (or my wallet) around the price.  Especially when there are several top notch writing curriculum on the market that are multi-level friendly and cost less.

Write with World retails for $95 per year OR $165 when both first and second year books are purchased together.  Purchase includes access to the user website coming this fall.
