Check out the original post Tori Amos reissues her first two albums, Under the Pink and Little Earthquakes! on
Are you a Tori Amos fan? I have to say I am a bit of one – I’ve always been fascinated with her brutal honesty and amazing musical ability, from the first time I heard about her until now, that I’ve listened to most of her Reissues of “Little Earthquakes” and “Under the Pink”. If you are a fan, these albums are above and beyond what you’ve heard before!
I am on holiday as I write this, surrounded by the North York public library for a little while, but I have managed to listen to Little Earthquakes at work a few days ago, and have been trying to listen to Under the Pink on sporadic youtube streaming here while I’m in TO for the week (Yes I’m back in Toronto for a week). All I can say is WOW – I am loving what I’m hearing.
Now, I never did ‘Google’ Tori Amos to see her story, but the entire mood of this album, the grittiness and story behind the music and between the words, the genius of musical organisation and the fascinating haunting beauty of her raw emotion on this album made me do it. Why? Because no one could be this raw and true and honest and fantastic without one hell of a life story – and trust me, Tori Amos has one hell of a life story to back up her sometimes controversial music.
She is also a musical genius, has a mezzo-soprano range (which is sorta obvious now that I think about it) and can invent new pieces as easily as she can successfully re-invent really well known songs. I have to say I did not read the press release before I listened, so when I realized that I was listening to a Tori Amos version of Nirvana’s famous “Smells Like Teen Spirit” I was blown away and more than pleasantly surprised. I was even more blown away when I realized I truly loved the Tori Amos version of it. I may or may not have started singing it with her at work…..
Her own songs, too were mesmerizing – I found myself often stopping work and just listening to her – from her crooning to her aggressive projections and then to a completely majestic a cappella (although the subject matter of that in particular could be quite disturbing for some people!)…I was absolutely fascinated and I wanted more….If you are a Tori Amos fan, you would want more too.
Tori Amos, Little Earthquakes and Under the Pink!
