Top End-of-Summer-2014 Recommendations!

By Homesmsp @HomesMSP

With back-to-school ads overtaking commercial space online, in print and on air, it’s official: summer is on the downswing. In these last few weeks before Labor Day is over and done, however, there are myriad ways to engorge yourself in the vestiges of the season. Here are our three top picks for late-August/early-September fun!

The State Fair

With the nickname, “The Great Minnesota Get-together,” you simply can’t go wrong. This is the place where, for 12 days, we celebrate all things MN, from agriculture and industry, to questionable fashion choices and undying fandom of music long past its prime. When planning a visit to the fair, no discussion is complete without anticipating the food to be consumed, and each year, new and old vendors throw something new into the ring, hoping for the next culinary mainstay. Chocolate Dessert Salami, Beer Gelato, Deep-Fried Lobster On-a-Stick, and Gluten-Free Beer-Battered Brat are among the new food offerings this year. Find a full listing of foods, and other information at mnstatefair.org.

Renaissance Festival

Just like Game of Thrones without the threat of an untimely demise, RenFest is modeled after a 16th Century village with King Henry and Lady Elizabeth. The largest Renaissance Festival in the United States with an annual attendance of 300,000, the festival celebrates its 44th season in 2014. I have fond childhood memories of wearing a lovely beribboned flower garland, gnawing on a turkey drumstick there as a child; the festival also commemorates the combat traditions of the time with live armored jousting. Attendees can choose from several themed weekends (Highland Fling, Shamrocks & Shenanigans, Ye Olde Pet Fest), sample Faire Food, purchase goods from artisans in the market place, and take in shows at any of the 16 stages of live entertainment.

Canterbury Park

With races taking place a few days each week from mid-May until the end of September, only a handful of nights remain to watch the horses this season. Race-goers have the option of milling about among the crowd while watching from the lower decks, or reserving a table in the restaurant or clubhouse. Canterbury offers free parking, and a games room with poker and blackjack tables, and several themed nights remaining in the season (Wiener Dog Wars, anyone?), there’s a little something for everyone at Canterbury!

Whatever the rest of your summer brings, the HomesMSP Team wishes you a fun and safe August!
