The alley with Tonbai Walls
The earthen wall that re-unilizes fire bricks or old kiln-ware is called a “Tonbai Wall”.
“Tonbai” means a fire brick that is used for the kiln wall.
It is heated to a high temperature in the kiln and has a nice tint that in made by various pottery colours adhering.
That os a scene peculiar to Arita.
Tonbai Walls are though to have been built in the Edo era.
We can see them everywhere in Arita, especially along the alley which run from the Arita Ceramic Museum at Odaru to the Big Gingko Tree at Izumiyama.
We call this street “the alley with Tonbai Walls”.

トンバイ塀のある裏通り
「トンバイ」とは窯壁に使用する耐火煉瓦のことで，古窯の耐火煉瓦や窯道具を再利用した土塀が「トンバイ塀」と呼ばれています。これは窯の中で高温に熱せられ様々な釉薬が付着してできた微妙な色合いをもち，有田独特の景観を呈しています。
トンバイ塀は，江戸期から築かれたと思われ，現在も有田町内の各所に点在していますが，とりわけ，大樽の有田陶磁美術館から泉山の大公孫樹までの裏通りには多く，この裏通りを「トンバイ塀のある裏通り」と呼ばれています。
