to Keep from Worrying

By Melissa Boles @_mboles

I’m not so good at writing blog posts on weekends – I can’t believe I forgot until now!

I am a worrier.  Everything seems to make me worried – how I’m going to handle my money next month, or what work is going to look like for the week, or what people will think about me if I say a certain thing.  It seems to be inherent in me, for it happens constantly, and I’ve done it for years.  And I wish I had a cure – for you, and for me.

If you search for quotes about worry, you’ll find dozens.

“Worrying is stupid.  It’s like walking around with an umbrella waiting for it to rain.” – Wiz Khalifa.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.” – Philippians 4:6

“Worrying doesn’t take away tomorrow’s troubles, it takes away today’s peace.” – Unknown (There’s also a version that exchanges “peace” for “strength.”)

“Worrying is like a rocking chair.  It gives you something to do but it doesn’t get you anywhere.” – Anonymous

“Worry is a misuse of the imagination.” – Dan Zadra

The thing about these quotes is that, as great as they are, they often can’t fix worrying.  And the more you worry, the more you stress.  And the more you stress, the worse you feel.  And then you start to worry about why you’re feeling unwell.  And the cycle continues.

I wish I had a secret for how to stop it, but I don’t.  The only thing I can tell you is that I make a lot of lists.  I’ve started to create a budget, though I’m still not so great at following it, and I do a lot of journaling and talking about things with people I trust.  It doesn’t remove the worry, but it helps.

When others worry, it breaks my heart, but I sometimes don’t treat myself the same way.  So here’s my pledge to you – I’m going to work harder not to worry.  Will you work harder with me?
