Tire Load and Speed Rating

Posted on the 10 June 2023 by A2v
Tire load and speed ratings are important specifications that indicate the maximum load capacity and speed capability of a tire. These ratings are typically indicated on the sidewall of the tire and are standardized to ensure safety and performance.
Load Rating: The load rating of a tire refers to the maximum weight that a tire can safely carry at the maximum inflation pressure. It is indicated by a numerical value, often referred to as the Load Index, which corresponds to a specific load capacity in pounds or kilograms. The higher the load rating number, the greater the load-carrying capacity of the tire. Load ratings are important to ensure that the tire can support the weight of the vehicle and its occupants, as well as any additional cargo.
Speed Rating: The speed rating of a tire indicates the maximum speed at which the tire can safely operate. It is represented by an alphabetical code on the tire sidewall. Each speed rating corresponds to a specific maximum speed in miles per hour or kilometers per hour. The speed rating is designed to match the capabilities of the tire with the speed capabilities of the vehicle. It is important to choose tires with a speed rating that meets or exceeds the maximum speed capabilities of the vehicle to ensure safe operation.
Here is a commonly used speed rating chart:
Q: Up to 99 mph (160 km/h)
R: Up to 106 mph (170 km/h)
S: Up to 112 mph (180 km/h)
T: Up to 118 mph (190 km/h)
U: Up to 124 mph (200 km/h)
H: Up to 130 mph (210 km/h)
V: Up to 149 mph (240 km/h)
W: Up to 168 mph (270 km/h)
Y: Up to 186 mph (300 km/h)
Z: Exceeding 149 mph (240 km/h)
It's important to note that the speed rating should match or exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended maximum speed for the tire to ensure safe operation. Additionally, the load rating and speed rating should be considered together when selecting tires to ensure they are suitable for the intended application and vehicle.
