How to Improve Relations With Subordinates

Be in Contact With Subordinates

As a manager you should establish a regular contact with subordinates. Visit their workplaces frequently and ask about their professional problems on the spot. Daily check-in calls and weekly meetings are very useful tools. People like to be called by their proper names and not by their official appointments. Greet your subordinates with their names and display a pleasant profile to them.

Welcome Feedback From Subordinates

Your subordinates are the front-line workforce that has the first hand knowledge of the tasks in hand. They may be having very good ideas to share with you but may be shy of discussing the same. Encourage them to come forward with their ideas and suggestions. Ensure them that their suggestions will be given due weight. If a good suggestion comes from them that is helpful in economizing and streamlining the processes, appreciate the concerned persons for that.

Remain Within the Defined Limits

While conversing frankly there is a risk that some subordinates may take the liberty to cut indecent jokes or discuss some personal matters of other workers or superiors. You may tactfully tell them the limits and norms within which your mutual relationship should remain. When the discussion takes an unpleasant turn you should change the topic towards some professional matter.

Applaud the Subordinates on Special Occasions

You should remember the special days of subordinates like the birthdays and wedding anniversaries. Select a small venue to celebrate the event with cake or sweets. This will inculcate a sense in the subordinate that organization is like their home.

Take Interest in Their Career Progression

Organize career counseling sessions with subordinates where you should discuss with them professional matters in more cordial and intimate manner. Advise them as to how they can increase their efficiency and output while being a part of the setup. Guide them how to enhance their educational level so that they can add value to their profile. Tell them ways and means to enhance their salaries and incomes. Guide them that with more proficiency they will be able to achieve higher grades of salary and allowances and will have more chances of promotion to next senior appointments.

Focus on Their Welfare

Apart from the labor laws and government regulations to provide benefits to the workers, you, as a manager, should take personal interest in the welfare of your subordinates. Ensure that all the dues are being paid to workers without any delay. If some person is having grievances against the procedural delays, you should put in your personal efforts to remove the bugs. If the subordinates know that their superiors are concerned about their welfare they will respect them more.
