Kids live in a world full of difficulties, and building their confidence is an important part of their growth as a whole. As parents, teachers, and leaders, we have a big impact on how they feel about themselves and how strong they are. Here are some useful ways to help your child feel better about themselves:

“Almost every part of a happy life is linked to self-confidence” – Psychology Today.

It makes sense that we want to help our kids feel good about themselves. How do we do it, though?  We’ve put together what we think are the 10 best “easy to follow” ideas and tips to help you boost your child’s morale and confidence.

Tips to Boost Your Child’s Confidence

Encourage a Good Attitude

You should also try to be upbeat in your thoughts and the things you say to your child.   If someone says “I can’t” do something, show them other ways they could try to do it, or help them show that they can!

It boosts their confidence and gives them a “can do” attitude to remember the things they’ve done in the past, especially the ones they didn’t think they could do.

Use our Growth Mindset worksheet to help you remember to use good words with your child.

Set Goals for Each Week

Each week, try giving your child small goals that they can reach. One easy goal could be to finish a book, clean their room, do 60 skips in one minute, or something else.

It could also be a longer-term goal, like getting a better math score on the SAT by the end of the school year.

You should be able to reach your goals, and you could make a short list of them. When they cross them off the list, your child will feel like they’ve really done something. Everything helped them feel better about themselves and want to do well in the future.

Tell Them They Should Help Other People

Doing nice things for other people boosts our confidence. Help your kid do something nice for someone else without expecting anything in return. This could be one of the goals for the week above.

Calling a grandparent to see how they are, helping a friend who is having trouble at school, baking cakes for a neighbor, etc., are all easy things that could be done.

Individuals who do kind things for others will feel much better about themselves in the long run.

Taking Care of Yourself

It may seem clear, but making sure your child eats well, exercises regularly, and gets enough sleep can really help them feel better about themselves.

When you eat well and work out, your body’s natural “feel good” chemicals, called endorphins, get stronger. These things make them feel better on the inside and can make them happier.

Your child will feel better about themselves no matter what they do. It could be dancing, riding a bike, or playing tig.

You could use our Printable Routine to help your child make time to exercise every day.

Make Them Leave Their Safe Zone

It’s nice to be in a safety zone, but nothing ever grows there. Instead of the small goals in tip 2, give your child a real challenge. This should be safe but also take them out of their comfort zone.

Now is the Time for Real Growth

It should be something that might make them a little uneasy, like raising their hand in class when they usually try to avoid it, playing an instrument in front of a crowd, giving a speech in front of the whole school, etc. Tell them to “give it a try,” and when they do, they’ll discover that they “can.”

When they push themselves past their limits, they find out that they can do things they never thought were possible. This boosts their confidence.

Tips to Boost Your Child’s Confidence

Ask Them What They Think and Feel

Asking your child what they think about things that are appropriate for their age shows that you value them and their thoughts, which makes them feel better about themselves.

It could be something as simple as picking out what to watch on TV, what to eat for dinner, or what to wear.

That choice could be something bigger, like where to go on vacation, buying a new car, or picking a high school.

Give Them Freedom and Duty

Give your kid some “special jobs” to make them feel useful, responsible, and capable. Also, calling them “special” can make them feel even better about themselves.

Some of these special jobs could be helping you out in the kitchen, taking care of a pet, or going to school alone, as long as it’s safe to do so.

Giving them more freedom and responsibility helps them believe in their abilities.

Accepting Yourself

Take some time to talk to your child without anything else going on. Have a meal with them at least once a week and urge them to talk about their feelings, both good and bad.

Now is a great time to thank them for their hard work and let them know that no one is perfect. Make them aware that even social media stars have flaws, which is what makes them special.

Put up a Wall of Fame

Make a “wall of fame” of all the great things your child has done to keep things that make them feel good in sight.

Photos of them doing sports or other things they enjoy, art projects, or awards could be on this list.

Putting up a wall of fame for someone shows that you are proud of them and appreciate their hard work. And seeing these things can really boost their confidence when they’re feeling down about themselves.

Spend Time With People Who Make Them Happy

The more confident and happy people your child is around, the more confident they will become.

You should be a good example for them, even if you don’t always feel like it. Positive words (tip 1) can help, and you could also help your child make friends with other kids who are sure of themselves.

Your child’s confidence will go up a lot if they have friends who support and encourage them instead of those who put them down.

Good luck with them! You can help your child gain self-confidence, which is one of the best things you can give them for life.

Celebrations of Success
