Tips for Organizing a Child’s Messy Room

By Peppertan

Organizing your child’s room may seem like a process that will take forever. You know, it might too. But, once you have their room organized, it will be much easier to keep up with. Since few people are natural-born organizers, it takes you to help your child do it properly. Of course, you do not want to do it for them, and you want to ASSIST them. If you do it all for them, then they will not learn how to organize.

As a pre-warning, you will need to make a time commitment to help your child, but, with the tips below, you will find yourself off to a good start.

You Need Kid-Friendly Furniture

Kid friendly furniture can help your children keep their rooms clean and organized. In addition, the more kid friendly the items, the easier it is for your child to keep the room clean too. Think about it – children would have a hard time with canopies, fluffy curtains, and oversized pillows. The easier the items are to handle, the more likely your children will pick them up and take care of them.

Always choose kid friendly furniture such as platform or trundle beds, surfaces that can be easily cleaned or wiped down, and comfortable flooring.

Make it Easy to Make the Bed

There is nothing worse than a messy bed – it can turn a clean room into one that looks disorganized. To help you with this, swap out the top sheet your child uses for a duvet or comforter. This way, all they need to do is pull the comforter or duvet up and their bed is made.

Storage Needs to Be at Your Child’s Height

If you cannot reach something, how likely are you to continue to use it? Unlikely. You do not want to struggle over and over. You should get down on the floor and look at your child’s room from their point of view.

This way, you know exactly where you can put items in storage so that your child can reach them. If you keep items within your child’s reach, they will be more apt to put the items away when they are done using them and your child will be able to get the toys too without a struggle.

Put a System in Place for Clothes

Clothes are probably one of the most commonly found items on the floor in any bedroom. To help your child keep their clothes off the floor, find them a fun and playful laundry basket to keep in their room. You should also put a system in place that works for you and your child.

For example, set out the week’s clothes on Sunday night. This way, your child always knows what to wear the next day and does not have to scramble through their clothes.
