Thoughts on the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 to 3

By Clari @clarisaysblog

Am I late? I think not! The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (CAOS) continues with season 3 which premiered on January 24, 2020. If you haven't watched the first two seasons plus chapter eleven or their Christmas Special called "A Midwinter's Tale", you can stream all on Netflix. You'll probably be done in two days and set to start watching season 3.

Now before I share my thoughts on the latest season of this chilling show, let me share with you my thoughts on the previous seasons. Don't worry I won't reveal much.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

As her 16th birthday nears, Sabrina must choose between the witch world of her family and the human world of her friends. Based on the Archie comic.

Season 1

First let me say that Sabrina Spellman, Casper, Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and the rest of the Riverdale gang has a special place in my heart. I discovered these characters through the comic book series published by Archie Comics. Take note, I didn't get to read all but I did enjoy the ones I got access to as well as the series such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Archie's Weird Mysteries to name a few.

I know that there is a huge switch of tone and theme with the live-action series. So if you have young children, heads up! This is not a show for them, okay?

Going back, I do find the CAOS a chilling and great show in its own genre. The first season which premiered in October 2018 is the best. It was a great kick-off for the new series.

Gone are the magical and amazing world of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I have to admit though that I do miss that but I only loved that series until Sabrina Spellman turned 18. From that season, fourth to be exact, I didn't enjoy it anymore. The magic was gone.

So I was glad the series developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for Netflix was released. They offered something different for the generation who grew up with the comics, the series as well as the new generation of audience.

Season 2

It was good, too but it did not overpower the first season. You see, season 1 gave us all the impression that The Dark Lord/ Lucifer Morningstar played by Luke Cook is all-powerful. I honestly was frightened by his mere silhouette in season 1. Then came in his human form in season 2 which I found weak. I guess I was looking forward to more darkness in this season.

Don't get me wrong though. It was filled with darkness and all but it wasn't enough for me to love it more than season 1. But then again, season 2 is all about Sabrina's journey plus Father Blackwood was the true villain.

And now, for the latest season.

Season 3

Let me just say that I now understand why The Dark Lord/ Lucifer Morningstar had a little thing to do with season 2. This is somewhat his season and the rest of the witches, humans and pagans.

Each group had their own moments which I appreciate. Their characters have grown which means that they are now capable of accepting whatever darkness or weird situation they are in. Which led me to the conclusion that the latest season of CAOS has embraced its characters, the weirdness and has officially plunged to the dark side of the spectrum. Which they should! It's a series about witches, pagans, and they kept saying the phrase, "Praise S*****!"

Oh! I also have to address that there are several movie references such as Back to the Future and Clash of Titan as well as song and dance numbers; not to mention, some cringe-worthy dialogues. It was annoying at first but then realised that these are teenagers. Sure, one of them has the "cunning" or higher power; nonetheless, they are all young. They will reference and say what's exactly on their mind.

Overall, CAOS season 3 is enjoyable to watch because it's packed with interesting storylines weaved into one great plot. Plus, the chilling adventures were not limited to one space or time. I have to admit though the goriness and action reminded me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer which is not a bad thing. In fact, the direction most especially the strong ensemble made season 3 the best.
