Sound can do incredible things, from shattering windows to shredding up a phone book into pieces. But using sound to put out fire is definitely something new.
Two students at George Mason University, Seth Robertson and Viet Tran have figured out a way to not only use sound to put out flames, but they’ve also developed an awesome fire extinguisher based on the technology, that you can carry around.
Here’s how it works. The sound-powered fire extinguisher blasts low-frequency sound waves in the 30 – 60 hertz range at the flames, which attacks the fire at its core by separating its oxygen from fuel, eventually putting out the fire for good.
“[The sound waves] separate the oxygen [in the fire] from the fuel. The pressure wave is going back and forth, and that agitates where the air is. That specific space is enough to keep the fire from reigniting,” Tran told the Washington Post.

Robertson and Tran’s creation is far from complete. But they’re hoping to develop this technology to bring these fire extinguishers to all homes around the world and even help firefighters put out fires quicker than ever.
