Verdict on There’s Something in the Barn
Recap
The movie follows an American family trying to renovate a Norwegian home. However, they end up disturbing a barn elf and it destroys their lives.
Best Parts
This movie shows how disruptive a family can be trying to move into a new world without understanding their traditions. It plays into the arrogant American figures who believe they know everything. The kills come off creative using Christmas objects as the main weapon. This plays into fairytales and fables well, which gives the horror an added level of terror. The movie relies on the dumb American stereotype, which brings comedy to the film.
Worst Parts
This movie does fall into the stereotypes too often, while the American ones work, the Norwegians don’t. The movie also feels like it wants to bring the chaos of Gremlins without the cute charm that gave us.
Performances
Martin Starr brings the dumb American figure to life, he feels like the disorganised figure jumping first before trying to deal with the problems. Elsewhere, the performances are good without being anything standout for horror comedy.
Final Thoughts –There’s Something in the Barn is a fun Christmas horror movie.
