The Young Women’s ‘no Good’ is So Very, Very Good [free Mp3]

I’m feeling a Mary Jane/Spiderman chemistry with this song in that I want to slowly, carefully unmask The Young Women to reveal their true identities, then kiss them while they’re dangling upside down (optional). Seriously, though, I know nothing about The Young Women other than these four facts: 1) They’re an “NYU band.” 2) The singer is not a young woman (99% sure). 3) They opened for Kurt Vile in February. 4) They’re fucking amazing. Or, at least the one song they’ve posted to Soundcloud is amazing.

“No Good” is a melancholy, acoustic confessional  – “I don’t know how to make you happy, I don’t, I don’t, I don’t. After all this time, you’d think I would…” A slight choir harmony, some percussion, and a guitar solo tumble in somewhere near the end of the two-minute song, finishing the track with more of a flourish than a bang. I listened to it again and again, then one last time…then again.

Whoever The Young Women are, they’ve created a gorgeous two-minute soundscape — a “whiskey at the end of a long day” song. Here’s hoping for more from them, and the sooner the better. Until then, download “No Good” for free right here and now.
