The Woman Who Transformed Her New York Apartment into an Urban Garden

By Gfl

Summer Rayne Oakes lives in an apartment in one of the busiest cities in the world — not exactly the most obvious place to grow a garden. But despite the lack of space, she has turned her Brooklyn apartment into an indoor jungle containing 500 plants.

Summer has been a keen gardener since she was a child growing up in rural Pennsylvania. The apartment is her way of cramming the country lifestyle into an urban living space.

The apartment includes a living wall in the bedroom, a fig plant that has taken over the bedroom ceiling, and a vertical garden that grows herbs in mason jars. You will also find things like miniature greenhouses, LED ligthing systems, a compost bin and a sub-irrigation system for certain plants.

Summer estimates that she spends half an hour a day watering plants, and once a week she spends around an hour and a half pruning, composting etc.
