The Weeknd Keeps Cancelling Shows

The Weeknd was nominated for five MTV VMA awards on Sunday night, including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year. He was also scheduled to perform. Well, The Weeknd must have had other plans for his weekend, because he was a no-show at the VMAs. Whatever could have kept The Weeknd from such an important work event? Staring into a pink neon light with zero emotion while people he barely know do nose-drugs around off an 80s-style glass coffee table? Trying to legally convince his girlfriend Selena Gomez to legally change her name to Selna Gomz? According to TMZ, he just didn’t feel like going.

Sources tell TMZ that The Weeknd has bee on the road for a while (he’s currently in the middle of his Starboy: Legend of the Fall Tour), and he’s tired. Yes I just pictured The Weeknd in a lace nightie singing about how tired he is, a la Lili von Shtupp. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, either. The Weeknd reportedly booked the MTV gig a while back, well before he got ti-ti from his tour. A few days before the show, he decided he wasn’t up for it, and bailed.

The Weeknd must be really tired, because he actually cancelled on a show before the VMAs too. Page Six says he was supposed to perform a private show at a 20th anniversary event for Grey Goose vodka on Friday night in Los Angeles. He was even promoting it on Instagram the day before:

The Weeknd reportedly decided not to show up after the party had started, and the event was then cancelled due to “unforeseen production issues.” A rep for Grey Goose tells Page Six they plan on having another event with The Weeknd, which will be “bigger and better.

Bailing on the MTV VMAs would lead me to assume The Weeknd might have some sort of psychic powers and could predict the night was going to be a huge mess. But shrugging off a vodka party? That’s not tired, that’s a case of severe exhaustion. You know you need a Rip Van Winkle-level nap when the lure of free expensive booze can’t give you the energy to put on pants and leave the house.
