The Washington Post, the Republican Debate and Those Colorful Twitter Cards

Illustration and design have arrived to Twitter courtesy of The Washington Post as the US Presidential Campaign of 2016 gets into full swing.

During the debate last Thursday, The Washington Post “illustrated” its live tweets with colorful cards that included a head shot sketch of the candidate and a specific quote. The concept came together via the illustrations of Richard Johnson, who works on the Post’s graphics team, with Chris Cillizza’s messages.

Great idea to add visual storytelling to those 140-character messages.  I am sure art directors everywhere are going to be taking note, ready to explore more visual possibilities with Twitter and other social media.
