With the quick approach of the end of July, the country gets closer and closer to one of its biggest surfing events and competitions: the U.S. Open of Surfing.

Held at Huntington Beach Pier in Southern California, the U.S. Open of Surfing is a Nike, Hurley, and Converse sponsored event that takes place on one of the most famous surfing beaches in the country. The event, started in 1959, is a kind of prerequisite for the ASP World Tour, which includes the best of the best when it comes to surfing.  With competitions for men and women, surfers such as Chelsea Georgeson, Brett Simpson, and Kelly Slater have won in the past, which may not mean a lot to most people unaware of this thrilling sport, but is pretty exciting for the surfing community. The competition not only includes some impressive surfing, but professional skating, live music, and beach fun as well. Bands such as Grouplove, TV On The Radio, and Best Coast will be preforming, adding to the fun of the competition.

The event, held from July 28th- August 5th, includes a possible paycheck of $200,000 for competing surfers and inductions into surfing’s hall of fame. Top competitors for this year include surfers such as Brett Simpson, Cooper Chapman, and Julian Wilson, making for an exciting competition and a “gnarly” time.
