These photos were meant to be part of the post about Festa de São João (Festival of Saint John), but after editing them I decided this “unsung hero” tending a smoky grill in Vila Nova de Gaia deserved his own. Just look at that big pile of sardines — it must’ve taken him ages to finish them all. Talk about dedication!
Lisbon’s festival to St. Anthony (Festa de Santo António) in early June is also a sardine-filled affair, as is St. Peter (São Pedro), which follows St. John. The smell of June in Portugal is the smell of grilled sardines in the air during the Popular Saints Festivals.
It goes without saying, the Portuguese eat a LOT of fish!
