The Twilight Sad have made a welcome return with ‘Waiting for the Phone Call’, the band’s first new music in over five years – and it features The Cure legend Robert Smith on guitar.
While the lyrics remain typically dark and despairing – ‘There’s a pain in me no one can see, gather around, come die with me. Watch me die’ – there’s a hopeful defiance when James Graham declares ‘No one can hurt me now’ against a swathe of gothic and industrial synth sounds, inevitably loud guitar work and discussions of dreaming.
