The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/07/23

Final Reminder: Only Murders In The building starts tonight! I have no other interesting TV news, except if Winning Time doesn’t regain the audience it lost, i do not predict a third season. If you’re a big fan of that show, don’t put off watching it. It needs a ratings boost.

12) All In The Family (FreeVee)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Weird to see this show at the bottom of the list, but while this episode offered Jean Stapleton a bit more to do as she recounts what life was like when Archie has a gambling addiction, it is so hard to talk to someone like Archie who can’t really have a serious conversation, and remains fairly belligerent. This episode reminded me more of how poor Edith is more put upon, and how Archie doesn’t see her as a partner or an equal, but someone who just exists in his space to clean and cook. In some ways the episode worked for me, but not in the ways it wanted to by talking about gambling.

Episode Grade: B-

11) Clarissa Explains it All (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Clarissa is trying to pull one over, and it leads to her and Ferguson needing to do an interview, but they hate each other too much. This series is full of sight gags when Clarissa explains things that we don’t get because of a lack of audio description.

Episode Grade: B-

10) X-Men (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Considering where the last episode left us, we make a wild jump to Wolverine off in the wilderness hunting Sabretooth, but finding an indigenous population that hasn’t seemingly doesn’t know what a mutant is. Meanwhile, we just jumped into that Genosha storyline.

Episode Grade: B

9) FUBAR (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Well, I kinda knew based on how we left Boro that the finale would wind up like that. The description made sure to let me know that post-explosion, the building was still intact. The element of surprise was gone. Arnold has a solid Danny Devito joke, and even a repetition of a joke from Twins. Suggestion: This show isn’t strong enough to survive without a nostalgia boost. Have someone from Arnold’s past, like Danny, Linda Hamilton, Vanessa Williams, Eliza Dushku, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tony Goldwyn, or any of the other co-stars of his who are working in television pop over. Either that, or a brilliant use of Jean Claude Van Damme as next seasons villain, since he once was offered to play the Predator.

Episode Grade: B, Season 1 Grade: B

8) Veep (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

Selina is still working through the complications of needing her Clean Jobs commission at the same time as Filibuster Reform. not as funny as the previous episode, to be honest.

Episode Grade: B

7) Justified (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Revival Currently Running

Here I am in Season 3, and it’s so hard for me to score this show higher, because it always has moments in every single episode where I’m confused due to lack of audio description. However, I can tell I’m missing out on a great show. This episode saw Raylon and his team trying to figure out who killed one of their own, who was protecting someone in wit sec.

Episode Grade: B+

6) Frasier (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Revival Coming Soon

Frasier accidentally offers to pay for Daphne’s wedding, before he turns into a bridezilla. Meanwhile, Niles accidentally is dating a prostitute.

Episode Grade: B+

5) Hoff The Record (BritBox)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Sadly, BritBox has no audio description, at all. I’m trying to bother them into including it, but they really don’t care. This show really does make me laugh. David is so hard up for work, he takes this job that he thinks makes him an ambassador against land mines, but his agent actually booked him a gig with a warlord.

Episode Grade: B+

4) And Just Like That (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: not Yet Renewed

Che continues to be in this severe depression, which leads them to conclude their relationship with Miranda isn’t going to get any better, and they don’t want to not be friends anymore. Meanwhile, Carrie summons John Corbett back into the franchise. Did anyone actually root for the Aiden storyline the first time around? I didn’t. Can’t Carrie just fin someone new?

Episode Grade: B+

3) Everwood (FreeVee)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

We are working toward the end of the Colin Hart storyline. Colin is having more and more rage problems. He’s not the same person he once was, and Colin’s parents and Amy are trying to pretend he is. in this episode, even Bright finally taps out. Colin needs real help, but will he get it? Yes, this episode needs audio description. Delia tries to spend a night in the museum long before that was a film series, and she gets spooked by things we can’t see. That’s just one example. Yes, there’s also a subplot about a journalist coming to interview Andy, who ends up writing about Colin, but Colin slowly losing his mind is the emotional core of this episode.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Good Omens (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Still having to watch Seaosn 1, I appreciate the whip smart writing, as well as the delivery from leads David tennant and Michael Sheen. This is a show that could go dark really fast, but is keeping the material pretty light. Oddly pretty enjoyable so far.

Episode Grade: A-

1) The After Party (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

It’s time for ex-boyfriend Travis to tell his story. Paul Walter Hauser is really great in everything he does, and his episode is shot like an old 1940’s detective movie, except he’s kind of a bumbling idiot who is right one out of every ten times. Of course this guy didn’t do it, but his episode was entertaining.
