The Toll of the COVID-19 Pandemic: at Least 654,477 Dead

(Paris) The pandemic of the new coronavirus has done at least 618 477 dead worldwide since the WHO office in China reported the onset of the disease in late December, according to a report compiled by AFP from official sources Tuesday at 7 a.m. Eastern time.

More than 16 514 500 cases of infection were officially diagnosed in 185 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic, including at least 9 347 294 are today considered to be cured.

This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of contaminations. Some countries only test severe cases, others prioritize testing for tracing, and many poor countries have limited testing capacity.

On Monday, 4418 new deaths and 208 588 new cases have been identified around the world. The countries that have recorded the most new deaths in their latest reports are the United States with 654 new deaths, India (654) and Brazil (614).

The United States is the most affected country in terms of both deaths and cases, with 112 975 deaths for 4 286 770 cases identified, according to the count from Johns Hopkins University. At least 1 325 804 people were declared cured.

After the United States, the most affected countries are Brazil with 85 618 dead for 2 412 347 case, the UK with 45

dead (300 111 case), Mexico with 35 022 dead (395 489 case), and Italy with 029 112 dead (246 246 case).

Among the hardest hit countries, Belgium is the one that deplores the highest number of deaths in relation to its population, with 85 death for 096 000 0 inhabitants, followed by United Kingdom (61), Spain (58), Italy (58), and Sweden (51).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao) officially counted a total of 78

case (68 new between Monday and Tuesday), of which 4634 death and 68 861 healings.

Europe totaled Tuesday at 11 h GMT (7:00 a.m. Eastern Time) 198 412 deaths for 3 87 970 cases, Latin America and the Caribbean 173 993 death (4 442 706 case), the United States and Canada 148 971 death (4 408 679 case), Asia 056 743 death (2 576 309 case), the Middle East 25 983 death (1 107 841 case ), Africa 17

death ( 861 959 cases), and Oceania 196 death (16 28 case).

This report was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO). Due to corrections made by the authorities or late publication of the data, the increase figures on 18 h may not correspond exactly to those published the day before.
