Climb The Corporate Ladder or Own Your Own Business?

Some of you do not want to run your own business. You may want to climb the corporate ladder. You may like the steadiness of a weekly paycheck. But nobody goes into with the idea that they will start at the bottom and they will have reached their ceiling.

You spend your years in high school and then college to do well in life, not to be left behind and hope for the best.

The whole idea with starting on the bottom rung of a company ladder is to reach as high as you can get, to become the best company leader possible and perhaps one day run your own business.

How to Climb The Corporate Ladder

Before you can get there, you need to work out how to get there. There are the obvious ways to advance your career. For example, adding to your educational list of achievements with a night school or leadership MA that you can do online will help you. But these aren't the only tools that you use to utilize to get you where you want to be.

Here are some of the best possible tips to ensure that your ascension up the career ladder lands you firmly in that corner office with the big windows.

Replace Yourself As You Go

To get the promotion that you want, you have to show the big bosses above you that you are worth that helping hand into the bigger positions. This means replacing your old position with someone who can be just as good (obviously, not quite as good) as you were, so that the only possible way for you to go in your company, is up.

You have to stop yourself from slipping back down, so putting a new person in your place can help. Many people are afraid of this step as they think their replacement will put them out of work and not climb the corporate ladder.

Be Accountable

If what you want is to be the leader of a company, write it down. Say it out loud. Sing it from the rooftops. Whatever you do, make yourself accountable to hit those targets that you want to hit. Then, you can get to where you want to be.

Making sure that others know what you want can also help, as they will help you up the career ladder. If you are quiet about it no one will know what your intentions are. This is another way many of you will get passed over for promotions. Speak up!

Put Your Company First

When you want to do well, you have to say yes more than you say no. That means pushing through the overtime sometimes and even when you're not making much money. It also means being humble, that this is just a temporary position for you, because you're going to do better.

You just need to show up, suit up and get the day done. Because there are good things waiting. No time to waste!

No Suck-Ups Allowed

There's a level of being at the beck and call of your boss. But if it's going to turn you into someone who simpers and acts more 'yes, sir, no, sir', then you aren't going to achieve as much as you think. Don't suck up to get to the top - earn it because you're great. Don't be afraid to question things. I was always one that did in my former day job. I knew they had to be a better way to get some things done. 😊

Getting to the top of the corporate ladder is a goal for you. But even more so is that feeling that you have finally arrived there. To get there, you need to learn as much as possible and play by the rules. Besides, some day you may make up all the rules at your own company.

Good things come to those who work hard! After all you may end up running your own business one day. All the skills you learned along the way to climb the corporate ladder will someday help you to run your own business if you want.

Continue To Learn

It amazes me often how much I learned from all of my past jobs that I use today in my current role at my company. Even my first jobs as a graphic artist come in handy when doing social media posts.

Knowing how to set images up to look appealing is very important. Then, creating marketing messages to get attention. It all came from years of working for other companies.

Furthermore, the class I took at college for HTML helps me daily here. Every little job and courses brought me to running my own business. Even today, I still take courses and am learning new things. When you stop learning, you stop growing!
