The ten basic bathing suit rules you must follow to be happy in your swimsuit

Bathing suit season is here, which means two things — fun and relaxation at the pool or beach, and swimwear related panic attacks for many. It doesn’t have to be this way. All you have to do to feel comfortable and confident in your swimwear this summer is follow these 10 swimsuit rules.

Just like the real Ten Commandments the swimwear ten commandments are there as a basic foundation for life (or thin this case beach life) to function properly. All the other how to pick the right swimwear and style guides fall apart without these simple laws of swimwear. So we present the ten commandments of women’s swimwear.

1. Thou Shalt Not Settle When Shopping

Of course you’ll be tempted to settle for a bathing suit that kind of fits. Trying on pieces that make you feel fatter than you actually are, feeling like it takes forever, not finding a good enough deal, . These are just some of the things that make swimsuit shopping hard.

But don’t break the number one rule of looking amazing in your swimwear. Settling for a suit that’s alright will make you look alright. Get a swimsuit that you love that flatters your body and you’ll look and feel your best.

A swimsuit that’s too small will look terrible on you. Same with one that’s too big.

Even if you don’t find anything that day keep looking until you find something that you do fall in love with. This is why shopping online for bathing suits is so useful. You don’t waste any time traveling back and forth to the store. You just log onto a site and browse.

2. Thou Shalt Weareth A Swimsuit That Fits

There are few things less attractive than a woman wearing a bathing suit that’s too small. When a bathing suit is too small you’re likely to bulge in a very unflattering way. We could go into detail describing it but we’ve all seen that one overweight woman who has no business in a string bikini. And swimsuits that are too small are simply constricting and uncomfortable.

Inversely a swimsuit that’s too big on you also won’t look good as it will look saggy and frumpy. A bathing suit should fit you snugly but not be constricting.

And don’t think just because it fit last year it will still fit this year.

Experimenting with new styles and types of swimwear like this purple tankini is essential to finding what looks best on you.

3.  Thou Shalt Try New Swimwear Styles

Lots of women know what style swimsuit looks good on them. And they probably buy bathing suits that are very similar. Whether its a halter top or bandeau bikini, a tankini or a maillot, stripes or solid prints, try something new. Look at fashion magazines and see what’s in this beach season. You never know when you’ll find a style or a type of women’s swimwear that looks better on you than you realize.

4. Honor Thy Bikini and Thy One-Piece

Women’s swimsuits aren’t like other clothing. Between the damaging rays of the sun, salt water, sunscreen, chlorine and other chemicals, your bathing suit can really take a beating. So make sure you show them some love and respect. They can’t just be thrown in a washer. They need to be taken care of to look pristine. We recently did a post on the right way to wash your bathing suit that will help you take care of them so they continue to fit and look good on you longer.

Chic and sophisticated are what you must look for in a swimsuit.

5. Thou Shalt Wear Only Sophisticated Swimsuits

When it comes to bathing suits and beachwear, the line between sophisticated and sleazy is pretty easy to avoid. Rich colors and fun patterns are classy. Neon colors and graphic designs are not. Moderate and full bottom coverage; refined. Thong and Brazilian bottoms; not so much. Classy yet seductive bikinis; yes. Skimpy itsty bitsy bikinis; no. Remember you’re a real woman, make sure your swimwear reflects that.

6. Thou Shalt Not Steal A Bathing Suit

Please don’t steal bathing suits. You’ll get arrested. Getting a steal on your bathing suit is ok though.

7. Thou Shalt Buy A New Bathing Suit At Least Every Other Year

The more you wear it the more your swimsuit will lose its elasticity and start to pull just like any other piece of clothing. But thanks to the spandex material, even if you take proper care of it, it will wear out faster. And because of the exposure to the sun, chlorine and salt water the colors are much more likely to fade.

Of course there’s also the simple fact that a new swimpiece will look much better than an old one. Not to mention how you’ll look much more fashionable.

When it comes to swimwear go bold or go home.

8. Thou Shalt Be Bold In Your Swimwear

Bikinis and one piece swimsuits are probably the most revealing garments you’ll wear in public. They’re meant to be bold and you should too. Don’t be afraid to be a little more daring or a tad more sexy than you normally would. Remember to try something new (see commandment number 3). Find a swimsuit that emphasizes your better attributes. Flaunt what you got and don’t worry about what you don’t.

9. Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor’s Bikini Body

Even if she looks like she could have been on the cover of  last years Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition don’t feel intimidated or jealous. She probably worked hard for her body and should be respected for that. And there’s no reason to be jealous as you can still look amazing in a bikini or other bathing suit. It’s just a mater of finding which ones highlight your best features and look best on you.

And if you’re still feeling jealous, don’t just want to have a body like hers, get body like hers. Start eating healthier and exercise more. Even if you don’t wind up looking like Victoria Secret model, you’ll still feel more confident with yourself. That air of confidence will help you look even better.

10. Thou Lookest Better Than Thou Thinks In Swimwear

Lots of women feel self-conscious in their swimwear. They think they look fat or unattractive. But the fact is you look better than you think. There are even scientific studies that prove this. Once you accept this fact you’ll feel much more comfortable in your swimwear. Remember confidence is half of what it takes to look your best in a swimsuit.

(Bonus Commandment for the Guys)11. No Speedos

Are you currently swimming competitively? Are you David Beckham? If you answered no to either of these questions please don’t wear a Speedo. If you answered yes to the second one, please call me.
