The Sun by Dale Chihuly

The Sun – an art installation from the American artist Dale Chihuly – has been on display at Berkeley Square in London since February this year. This impressive piece of art consists of 1,573 hand-blown (yes, hand-blown) glass elements in different vibrant colours which are illuminated every evening. But I have to say that even during the day The Sun is worth taking a closer look at if you are passing by as it stands 5.5 metres high and is extremely impressive celebration of color. It is like a shining focus point in the middle of the luscious greenery at the square which draws you in with the playful use of bright colours, impressive use of shapes and just pure enigmatic power. According to Dale Chihuly: ‘What makes The Sun work for me is the massing of color. If you take a thousand hand-blown pieces of a color, put them together and then shoot light through them, it’s going to be something to look at.’ The Sun will be on display at Berkeley Square until December 2014, so you have still time to be blown away by Dale Chihuly’s incredible vision in person.
