I don’t have a single show on here I haven’t talked about before, so instead of a review, since I’m a Spirit Awards voter, here are a few things that excited me from the batch of nominations announced yesterday for the 40th annual Independent Spirit Awards:
I really loved that Best Picture slot for The Substance. Especially when you consider what did not get that spot. They did nominate The Brutalist elsewhere, which means it was eligible, and that is a movie people consider to be more of a lock for Best picture. It really is a cool nomination, and having had seen almost all of these nominees, a well deserved spot. Demi also got love in the Lead Acting race, which is not defined by gender, but Coralee should have been recognized also for her direction. Good for the voters for having the balls to nominate Sebastian Stan anyway. poor guy was excluded from Actors on Actors because supposedly no one wanted to be tied to The Apprentice. Really? Did anyone call DeNiro, because I’m fairly certain he’d be all over it. But, still a great nomination. There were a few nominations for Ghostlight, including in lead performer, and that is still at the top of my list. Inspired choices for people like Hunter Schaffer and Bridget Lundy Payne for horror titles, who are not in any real Oscar contention. Another nomination for Adam Pearson for A Different Man. I don’t know how Keith got the nomination for lead performance for Ghostlight but not Breakthrough? I look forward to watching the handful of titles I have yet to see. But I think when you look at what they did nominate, but didn’t nominate in other categories, it might give you a tiny bit of pause as to just how strong someone’s campaign may be when they lose a lead acting spot to Hunter Schaffer. So for all the Adrien Brody love, Marianne Jean Baptiste, or any number of performers whose films popped up elsewhere, this was a voting body that did not respond to those.
