When four best friends who have done everything together over the past well seventeen years they are struggling to know how to deal with spending the whole summer away from each other. To help them they find a strange pair of jeans that somehow fits them all perfectly, sending them around the world during the summer.
I can vaguely remember when this film was released and I probably thought I was way too cool to go and see it. But I thought this was the perfect choice to watch on a Bank Holiday Monday afternoon and it was a very good choice in all honesty. Not a difficult watch with some decent performances. I will admit that I have been catching up with Blake Lively’s career since my Gossip Girl obsession. This was her breakthrough role as well, so pretty good to watch. I have also seen Alexis Bledel in a few films over the years as well.
The four main characters were likeable enough which made it easier to watch. Each of the four girls had their own problems and issues that they had to address over the summer. I am sure we can all relate to that considering we have been in many situations ourselves over the years. At 17/18 though you do feel that everything that is happening to you is totally the end of the world.
I won’t go into the details of each of the small stories that link into the one as the girls keep in touch with the jeans and writing letters. Come on I love letters isn’t a shame everything is so instant all the time now with smart phones and social media. Anyway that is what makes the film work as well, that they don’t have that constant instant contact with each other and must look to write instead.
Certainly one of the better coming of age comedy/dramas that has been released in recent years to be totally honest. It does have some interesting moments that will probably be able to help teenagers who watch the film. You need to keep going no matter what and you will always come across someone who is having a worse time than yourself so never give up and keep going. Those were some of the messages I took from watching this film.
It takes the subject of family into different situations but all ultimately showing that no matter if you disagree or go through tough times they will always be there in the end. Understanding was something that they all had to learn about, which I guess we often forget in everyday life. We are too busy thinking about ourselves to really think about those around us and what they might be going through. I guess this all sounds pretty deep but I do think this film was carrying so many good messages. It wasn’t based too much on romance with only a couple of moments and not overkill like a lot of films of this type. Showing that finding a boyfriend wasn’t the most important thing for the girls to do and learn over the summer.
