The Right Time?

My regular readers may remember last summer that I helped Little Mr A make a craft clock to help him learn how to tell the time.  Unfortunately it didn’t really have the desired effect, he has not been overly interested in learning about it and we have put it away for a later date.

I have been wondering when is the right time to teach him how to tell the time?  At the moment he still has no concept or grasp of how long time is and I am thinking maybe he is just too young to understand it yet?

He is however enjoying his maths at school at the moment and I am wondering whether to buy him a digital watch instead?  I am thinking that this might get him introduced to how to tell the time digitally and create a little understanding before we move onto telling the time on a proper clock face.

As well as this it would also help him with recognising numbers.  Although he is getting better, he does sometimes struggle to know what two numbers together are off the top of his head and, if he is looking at them more regularly, they should start to sink in even more.

As he is a boy, inevitably things don’t get looked after like they should and therefore I wouldn’t want to spend a fortune on a watch that will most probably get bashed around a lot and covered in mud!  The Watch Hut have some great children’s watches that are not too expensive and would be ideal as a first watch.

If we do decide to buy him a watch I would want something robust with an easy to clean strap and waterproof too.  As well as that it would need a nice clear and easy to read display.  I have had a look around and thing something like this would be perfect…

What age did you start teaching your children how to tell the time?  I am being too ambitious expecting a 5 year old to pick it up?
