The Reaction

By Marinacng @MarinaCng
Sometime in the end of May, the Greek people got tired of all the unfair measures that are being taken and of all the lies they have been told, regarding the economic situation of the country, and decided to react.  The reaction was to peacefully gather in the main squares in all cities in order to express this anger, the main one being Syntagma Square in Athens, right in front of the Greek parliament.  This lasted for over a month: every afternoon, people would gather after work.  Everything was peaceful.

During on of the peaceful gatherings

On the 28th and 29th of June though, which were the days when the members of the parliament were going to vote on new harsh measures, the protesters decided to try and block the parliament in order to prevent the members from entering.  The result was a scene that reminded of a civil war: tear gas being spread with no control, throwing of rocks between the people and the police, beating etc.

There were damages to both private and public property, as well as many injured, who were taken care of in the underground metro station by volunteers who were also trying to fight the unbearable tear gas that had been sprayed and gone into the station, that was turned into a temporary first aid center.

These images were taken in the evening of the 29th of June.

After these two days of non stop battles, the people stopped gathering there, until a week later when they decided to start the peaceful gatherings again, but attendance was not as strong as before.

Today, people from other parts of Greece remain on Syntagma Square, where they have made their tents, trying to organize new gatherings.
