Donald Trump has resorted to the same anti-immigrant rant he used in the 2016 election. He's hoping that trying to scare American voters will save the Republican majorities in Congress. It may work with his racist and anti-immigrant base, but most Americans just don't believe him.
The public in the U.S. understands that immigrants make the country better -- not worse. That's the belief of a majority of the general public (53%) and Democrats (71%), and a plurality of Independents (48%) and Republicans (39%). Only a tiny minority thinks immigrants make this country worse.
And the public doesn't want a wall built between the U.S. and Mexico. Only Republicans want the wall (76%). The general public (60%) says no to the wall, along with Democrats (89%) and Independents (62%).
The charts above are from a recent CBS News / SSRS Poll -- done between October 14th and 17th of a national sample of 1,108 adults, with a margin of error of 3 points.
