The Neighbourhood ‘Female Robbery’

Posted on the 17 May 2013 by Thatswhatsheheard @sheheardblog

Hailing from California, The Neighbourhood have a dark sound reminiscent of early Maroon 5 (before they gave into the corporate pop machine). Formed in 2011 the band are comprised of vocalist Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassists Margott, and drummer Bryan Sammis. Now signed to Columbia Records they have just released their first full length album ‘I Love You’ and iTunes have given us Female Robbery for free.

The entire track is underlayed by the strange textural sound that creates the opening and is then pinned down by a heavy bass line and lots of cymbal work on the drums. The vocalists voice is smooth and silky and so very Maroon 5 but with a lot of Captain Jack allure to it (if you’re a Dr Who fan you’ll get that reference, if you’re not then you need to be… just saying…). The groove is comfortable and easy to listen to with a dark, hypnotic and trance like quality to the overall track.

There’s nothing in this track that makes me go wow but I also don’t hate it, I could sit and listen for a very long time. This track certainly makes me want to hear more from The Neighbourhood and lucky us, they have a SoundCloud.

So grab this one and head over to their SoundCloud for further listening. These guys are going to make waves in 2013.
