The Many Health Benefits Of Quitting Alcohol

By Bren @Virtual_Bren

If there’s one thing that we look forward to after a long day at work, it’s a well-deserved glass of wine, or two. But what happens when those couple of glasses become half a bottle, then a whole bottle, and then a lot more? It’s no secret that a lot of us drink too much alcohol. However, until we end up drinking throughout the day, it’s rarely seen as being a problem.

What we don’t think about, however, is how our drinking is affecting our health. While drinking in moderation – two to four glasses of wine a week, won’t cause any damage, excessive drinking will. If you regularly drink more than a couple of glasses of wine, you’re putting yourself at risk.

The good news is that if you quit drinking, you can quickly improve your health. It might not be easy waving goodbye to the booze, but there are plenty of services that can help you, such as Beachway Therapy, for example. Quitting alcohol for good might be hard, but it’s worth doing as it can vastly improve your health. To find out more about the health benefits of quitting alcohol, have a read of this:

Healthier organs

Did you know that people who drink excessively, are twice as likely to develop cancer? When we drink alcohol, it doesn’t just alter our behaviour but also damages our internal organs. The most common problem caused by alcohol is cirrhosis of the liver, which can cause severe damage resulting in the need for a liver transplant.

However, the good news is that by quitting alcohol, you can significantly reduce your risk of these problems. The healthier your organs are, the less likely you are to develop cancer and other nasty diseases. So the sooner you quit drinking, the better.

Lower weight

Alcohol is full of sugar and calories, so if you’re drinking a lot, the chances are you’re going to end up being overweight. People who are over the recommended weight are more prone to a range of health problems, including diabetes

While Vodka is low calorie, many alcoholic beverages aren’t. From wine to cocktails, most alcoholic drinks are packed full of sugar and empty calories. That’s why, if you want to ensure that you stay at a healthy weight, quitting drinking is a good idea.

Better brain power

When we drink, alcohol shrinks the front lobe of our brain – this is what causes our behaviour to change. While this doesn’t cause damage every so often, over time, this constant shrinkage will lead to reduced brain power. You’ll not only find that you aren’t as smart as you used to be, but also that your memory isn’t as good as it once was.

The good news is that if you quit drinking, over time you should recover your natural brain function. However, it could take months or even years for your brain to recover and be as powerful as it used to be.
