With hints of electronic beats and a seductively heated energy, “Better” by The KickDrums is an an incredibly catchy pop track. Teeming with tempered emotion, the song’s rhythmic punches and residually melancholic chorus merge in a silky way. On the surface, chorus lyrics “I’ll hurt for you / if it’ll make you feel better” are achy and echo loving self-sacrifice, but underneath, “Better” is heavy with jabs of vindictiveness through haunting repetition and vocal crescendos.
