The First Official Trailer For “Black Panther” is Here

And it will almost make you forget for a second about the Black Panther superhero suit. I said almost, not completely. Like, I’m interested in this trailer, but I also want to know why that costume looks like a custom-made S&M gimp suit purchased by Panthro from Thundercats.

Today, Marvel dropped the first of what will no doubt be many trailers for Black Panther, which comes out February 2018. Normally I’m not too fussed about superhero movies, but I’m excited about this one because I’m into the fact that it doesn’t star someone named Chris.

Chadwick Boseman plays the titular Black Panther, king of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. The trailer features everyone: Martin Freeman, Michael B. Jordan, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong’o. And a special guest appearance by ageless queen Angela Bassett as Black Panther’s mom, who I assume commanded her team of tailors to make her look like a sunrise if the sun was a doily.

Here’s the trailer, which looks like it takes place half the time in Africa, and the other half in a New York/Tokyo hybrid from the future. So kind of like the city in the new Blade Runner? Except unlike Blade Runner 2049, people are probably going to go to see Black Panther.

Something is confusing to me. Andy Serkis is playing…a human? That can’t be right. Maybe Andy Serkis filmed all his scenes in a motion capture suit and they CGI’d in a digital alien who happens to look like Andy Serkis in post-production. Honestly, we’re so used to seeing Andy Serkis playing Gollum and apes that it’s a little weird when he shows up playing himself.
