Verdict on The Exorcist Untold

The Exorcist Untold is a documentary exploring the creation of the Exorcist novel and movie. It explores how William Peter Blatty got the idea and struggled to get the novel published, at first. This moves on to see the struggles to get William Friedkin to direct the movie.

Elsewhere, the documentary looks at the cultural impact the original movie has had over the years. This includes the sequels, remakes, reboots etc as well as the spoofs over the years. It had become the backbone of what horror should be in modern society.

There is only a limited number of stories about the production of the movie. This would be seen as disappointing as learning more about the production is one of the biggest draws.

Sadly, this doesn’t end up exploring enough of what many people would have wanted. It puts a lot more on the conflict between Blatty and Friedkin and only glosses over most of the interesting stuff. This seems to squeeze a lot more technical material in the closing 20 minutes or so. For a concept with so much promise, we end up getting nothing new and a tiny bit of research couldn’t recover. It feels disappointing not to learn even more about one of the greatest horror movies of all time.

Final ThoughtsThe Exorcist Untold doesn’t dive deep enough into the history of the greatest horror of all time.
