The marriage of Superheroes and Gaming is one of perfect unity
The superhero genre as a whole has taken over most facets of everyday life these days. While its something that has always been around, in the form of lunch boxes, notebooks, t-shirts and toys, it has expanded to encompass nearly everything imaginable. (Thanks super enjoyable and successful superhero movies for flooding our lives with equally enjoyable and successful products!! How dare you!)
One such pairing has been around since the beginning, but still has found itself to be growing to nearly insurmountable levels. That would simply be (if the title of this post didn’t give it away) the geekasmic pairing of superheroes and gaming.
Yes, superheroes have always been hand-in-hand with the video game world since in the dark ages of Superman and the Atari. Who doesn’t remember playing Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage on the SNES or Sega Genesis? The X-Men Arcade game? Come on!! Fact is, our favorite spandex-clad heroes have always been around beyond the comics and cartoons, but like the ever adapting amoeba, the genre is able to find new life as pop culture and areas of interests expand.
Take for example, trading card games. Most people relate this to Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, or Yu-Gi-Oh!, but do you realize that there are multiple superhero related trading card games? Like Marvel’s Super Hero Squad, or the X-Men trading card game? Its random, but it’s there. Just under the radar to most.
You have dice games for the Justice League, Avengers, and X-Men. Board games like Heroclix and nearly every imaginable type of Monopoly you can come up with including Batman!
Sitting there thinking its all geeky or nerdy related things like trading card games, dice, or board games? Think again. There are a crazy amount of superhero themed slot machines out there, from Superman, to James Bond (yes I’m counting him, leave me alone!) to the Avengers and related heroes. Nearly everyone can interact with something superhero related. (And I’ll make it everyone once I get my Wonder Woman and Aquaman Depends on the market!)
You have places like Casino.com that offers multiple online games related to superheroes, including the Hulk, Iron Man, and the X-Men! You can play virtual pinball machines on nearly any type of device you can dream of, from your PC, to your smartphone. Just go and look at MarvelPinball.com and see. Not only do they have virtual machines, but they’re adding new tables all the time. That’s called demand people! People enjoy their superheroes, and they enjoy them overlapping into their other forms of enjoyment and entertainment.
Lets just come full circle with it and go look at the iOS App Store or Google Play and see how many superhero related games there are. It’s insane! I won’t even admit how many of them I have between my phone and my iPad, which of course the bulk of them are for my kids. (but if they mess up my Contest of Champions they’ve had it!) Not to mention the insane success of the Batman Arkham games on the PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
Fact is, superheroes are everywhere. The studios have learned that they’re cash cows, and everyone else is falling in line. Plus, it’s the perfect marriage, gaming and superheroes go together like peanut butter and bananas, champagne and caviar, sex and a Saturday night. They’ll always go hand-in-hand. The amount of geekasms they can give is endless.
