The Dog’s Sense of Smell

By David13676 @dogspired

Amazingly, dogs have roughly 25 times more smell receptors than humans! They use this heightened ability to gain and share useful information with those around them. Instinctively, dogs use their special ability to sniff out such things as food, danger, and even shelter.

With the collaboration of dog heroes, people have been able to solve tough crimes, make rescues, and even detect and eliminate bombs from exploding. Thanks to dogs and their selfless desire to help humans achieve safety and comfort, countless lives have been saved.

Scientists are inventing a variety of chemical-sensing technologies based on what they know about a dog’s ability to seek out and understand scents. To avoid having to send sniffer dogs into dangerous environments, it is hopeful that one day these technologies will replace sniffer dogs entirely.

Dogs truly do have a remarkable sense of smell for the millions of scents that pass their adorable noses on any given day. It will be great to see how mankind and dogkind can work together to solve future problems and inspire new inventions.
