Ruby is sixteen. She is dangerous. And she is alive. For now.
A mysterious disease has killed most of America's children. Ruby might have survived, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse than a virus: frightening abilities they cannot control. Pressured by the government, Ruby's parents sent her to Thurmond, a brutal state 'rehabilitation camp', where she has learned to fear and suppress her new power. But what if mastering it is a whole generation's only chance for survival?

I really wanted to enjoy this book. I love YA fiction. I love dystopian fiction. I've heard such rave reviews of this book. The plot sounds terrific. So The Darkest Minds sounded like a guaranteed hit. What the hell did I just read? Have I read something completely different to everyone who raves about this book? Colour me confused. First off, the world building sucks and the author never makes me believe the premise. Hundreds of thousands of kids die and those still alive develop psychic powers. It's going to take some effort to get me invested in something that sounds so far-fetched and ludicrous. Unfortunately, the author fails miserably. I simply didn't buy it. The fact the government locked up the kids with psychic powers also made no sense. Basically, locking up all of the kid's means there will be no future generations so the population will eventually fade out and die. WTF? Also, kids classed as Orange can read minds. Why not train them for the CIA or equivalent to be the best spy's ever? Nope, let's lock them up. The whole premise is nonsense. Instead of finding out what gifts the kids have and how they can be used for good, they piss their pants and lock them away. I don't buy it. Also, why do the kid's just stay locked up for a huge chunk of time when they clearly have the gifts to be free immediately such as controlling minds? Ruby is also a very irritating character. She just whines a lot. I really wanted to slap her.
