The Dancing Flame

As Jean Paul-Sarte said, 'Everything has been figured out, except how to live', yet we all live life, just not sure of how to. Life, to many remains a mystery. On the other hand, James Allen said, 'A man sooner or later discovers that he is the master-gardener of his soul, the director of his life'. So does this mystery really evolve into a well-understood actuality? Is it the twists and turns and ups and downs that make us, and the mystery is eventually solved by a simple reasoning of choices we make.
The Dancing Flame
A candle flickers unwaveringly in a dark vacant place The only life here, the candle shining without praise I think to myself, this dancing flame is life itself A life with a beginning and ending A life with an ending and a beginning A life with no cause or purposeful meaning A series of serendipitous or unfortunate events How would I know when the candle goes out? When to blow it out, or keep it burning? How do I know …? When we meet, to talk and not just speak When I reach out, to listen and not just hear When necessity pleads, to accept and not expect In pursuit of endurance, to be selfish and not so accommodating When I am all the strength I have, to move on and sometimes hold on When tribulation passes, to heal and not just recover When the lesson’s over, to understand and not just learn In uncertain times, to decide between blind faith and the obvious truth To know, this kindling flame takes chance on opportunity and mishap How do I know if I have the choice? I think that itself is a choice to make.
- Whatever choices you make, dance like a candle flame. Flutter like a butterfly. Fly like a bird. And live life. We all figure out how, somehow.
Love, NS
